New Fees For Public Hospitals In Zimbabwe
It seems like ordinary citizens just cannot catch a break in Zimbabwe at the moment. From grappling with an efficient and overwhelmed public transport system to watching in horror as the prices of basic commodities continue to skyrocket, ordinary Zimbabweans have a lot to contend with. Now they will have to deal with even more woes after public hospitals in the country hiked their fees.
With the latest increase in the fees for government hospitals, it means that the vast majority of civil servants can no longer afford hospital fees. What is even eerier about the whole situation is that nurses and doctors cannot afford the services that they are supposed to be giving to others.
The UBH’s Hospital Private Fees will now see adults paying ZWL$15 000 as Ward Deposit while children will be required to pay ZWL$7 500 as ward deposit. Adults will have to fork out ZWL$5 000 per day for staying in the wards while children will have to pay ZWL$5 000 per day for staying in the wards. However, children who require assistance will be required to fork out ZWL$15 000.
These new hospital fees are simply beyond the reach of many as most citizens barely earn half of the highest charges. Civil servants recently received a pay increase of 50 per cent as well as a US$75 Covid-19 allowance. However, nurses and teachers have alleged that even with the increment, the salaries are still below $5000 per month.
Nurses are currently on strike demanding better working conditions and a living wage. Yesterday some of the striking nurses were arrested by the police who charged them with breaking Covid-19 regulations.
